From learning commands and assisting with their owners daily routines, it seems that now dogs have also advanced to being recognized for their skill to trade.
That’s right. A black Labrador nicknamed Negro had been a long term resident at the Diversified Technical Education Institute of Monterrey Casanare in Colombia knows exactly how to buy stuff with ‘currency’. For the past five years, he has been under prime care of the school authorities as well as the students and cafeteria staffs.
Whenever Negro walks by them, the students will get him a cookie or treat from the cafeteria. Delighted Negro had observed it long enough to understand that the kids use some sort of thin, flat sheet to be exchanged with his food.
So one day, he just decided to walk up to the cafeteria to do his own purchase, with a leaf in his mouth!
“He would go to the store and watch the children give money and receive something in exchange. Then one day, spontaneous, he appeared with a leaf in his mouth, wagging his tail and letting it be known that he wanted a cookie,”teacher Angela Garcia Bernal told The Dodo.
Perhaps he decided to test the waters, before he would proceed to make it a routine to buy his daily cookie with a leaf he had found around the campus. Since his first try worked amazingly well, Negro had been a regular customer at the cafeteria for years now.
Gladys Baretto, a senior staff at the store is the provider of cookies and treats for Negro. She shared that he never fails to walk in the cafeteria everyday. He somehow discovered the means of basic commerce and has been diligently keeping up to his habit.
It’s amazing how he never runs out of leaves, or how he specifically only uses leaves to buy his treats.
The leaf had become Negro’s personalized currency, and Gladys is completely fine with it. Negro’s leaf-treats exchange has become a sight to be adored.
“When you first see it, you almost want to cry. He’s found a way to make himself understood. He’s very intelligent,” prides Bernal.
Still, some limitations had be to implemented. Gladys only gives Negro dog-friendly treats, and the smart doggo can only have a maximum of two cookies per day. Negro seem to have no issues with the agreement. Maybe he’s still too much in awe of how he is able to get cookies whenever he trades in leaves, a situation only exclusively applicable to humans.
